Car crash victim trapped in 'coma' for 23 years was conscious

Paralysed patient could not move or communicate with doctors until Belgian neurologist tested new brain scanner

For 23 years Rom Houben was trapped in his own body, unable to communicate with his doctors or family. They presumed he was in a vegetative state following a near-fatal car crash in 1983.

But then doctors used a state-of-the-art scanning system on the brain of the martial arts… » Full Story on The Guardian

This is phenomenal! 25 years ago, my daughter in law lay in a coma and ultimately died when life support was disconnected. She was clearly brain dead and beyond help.

Just imagine if she had NOT died and had been alive inside her paralyzed body. Letting her die would have been a real crime.

Houman may not ever be able to function physically, but at least he has his life back and is able to function enough to have a life. So what if he can't take care of himself physically. It doesn't mean that he can't make a contribution to the world much bigger than himself.

This is a wonderful piece of GOOD NEWS! Happy days! Good news from the media. Almost too good to be true, isn't it?

Can you imagine laying on your back, and starring at the ceiling for 23 years?

I think I'd rather be in prison for 23 years.

America has cheered for such things. Our local court's decision to disconnect Terry Schiavo from life support was carried out on March 18, 2005, and Schiavo died of effects of dehydration. They yanked her feed tube. President Bush tried to keep her alive but he just came back from vacation, dont'cha know!

Trapped in myself

I wonder if anyone ever played Metallica for him while they thought he was in a coma, and if he ever heard that song... That'd be a trip...

If he had been listening to that song at the time he crashed, what would it be?

Coincidence? Irony? Or just bad luck? Or....?

Remember how sure the media was with Terry S.. Their political motivation trumps all rational thought. There have been others with Terrys diagnosis that have recovered. I am not arguing with the diagnosis for Terry just the certainty, the motives and morality of US media outlets. Someone like Terry costs a lot of money to keep alive and the prognosis was not good. Likely the right decision was made for all the wrong reasons.

My living will would prevent that - I wouldn't want to be put through it and would prefer to be dead. On the other hand hurray for him, that is if he is concious and can communicate.

I think that this is an amazing story and I wish Rom and his family all the best. I was however disgusted by some of the other comments posted. Why can't people just enjoy a positive story in the media for a change?

I once met a bedridden lady that could only lay on her back. Could not move in any way. She was not in a coma and told me she considered it a blessing as she could continually look up to God.

As I see it, if I had been him I'd have lived in hope that I'd pull out of the coma at any moment and I'd have been terrified at talk of pulling the plug on me. It would be like being "buried" in a glass cofin above ground but unable to attract anyone's attention. Now, what do think about the ability of medical equipment to diagnose such things, and how many other people have had to experience the horror of knowing that doctors and their loved ones were about to be put them to death against their own will while they silently screamed, "Wait, wait, I'm here, I'm here."
