Forget Kobe, Tiger, Brady; Jimmie Johnson is today's top athlete

On Sunday night, Jimmie Johnson clinched his fourth straight Sprint Cup championship, and in so doing cemented... » Full Story on Yahoo! Sports

I get sick and tired of hearing nascar is not a real sport.let them get in there at 190 mph and talk to crew chief, listen to spotter and watch the whats going on around them at 140 plus degrees ya they are not running the forty but the are still some the top at what they do!!

It's not just a sport. It's a team sport. Every person on the team has to perform perfectly or they will not win a championship. I give all the credit to the Lowes Chevy team.

I still don't get it . Drive really really fast, slow down a little bit, turn left a little bit, drive really really fast again, slow down a little bit, turn left a little bit again............... Do this all afternoon. Oh yeah, they let you put their numbers on your vehicles back windows too, for a slight fee of course. I think its more fun driving up I-95 from Wilmington Del to Salem Mass.at night, in the rain, with a little slushy snow for added adventure. Maybe they could sell little I-95 shields for your back windows. Hats too!

Bravo for Johnson, a true talent, but a hack driver like Dale Jr. still gets all the promo bucks. Guess the rednecks stick together.

I never played football. I never played basketball. I was never in the ring. I AM A DRIVER AND LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!! Bravo Jimmie... you go... and go and go. Show those folks a thing or two! For anyone who just "doesn't get it"... try it before judging!

NOW THERE'S a real sport - driving fast in a circle!

I guess you DO need to know how to read . . . and think about more than 1 thing at a time . . . and shift gears . . . all while wearing a helmet!

What a joke!!!!!!!!

body goes out to beat jimmy johnson - they go out to win a race. When Tiger plays they go out to beat Tiger. It's not close. He isnt close to Tiger or Micheal Jordon in talent and athletic ability.

Yes, Jimmie Johnson drove consistently this year. But again, it's in the closed society of NASCAR with rules devised to keep the racing close...in cars that no longer have any relationship to those produced by automakers. They are now "spec" racers with the only thing distinguishing them being the engine block and decals.

Yes, F1 cars are NOT production cars. But they're also not promoted as such; they are the most technologically advanced vehicles on the planet.

But the original premise of NASCAR was to encourge the development of cars out of dealer "stock." Which it now does not.

And what some call driving is more bumpercar: NASCAR has all that bumping and shoving; do that in an open wheel car, and somebody goes flying.

Yes, Jimmie drove hard and smart. But top athlete? Not yet.

Let's see what he can do in other formulae before handing him a crown like that.

Incredible accomplishment for JJ, however, John Force won ten (10) consecutive Fuel Funny Car Championships in the NHRA, and 12 in 13 years.

I'm not a JJ fan, but I am a fan of his style, poise behind the wheel and clean driving. He is a hard working, very deserving Champion. Congratulations to him and his fine racing team.

Sitting in a car makes you THE top athlete? Because of endurance? Then there's still hope for us couch potatoes. Just wait'll next year!

It's not a sport - but it does serve a purpose. Give a redneck three cold six packs and a TV that works, and you can keep him in the trailer until he passes out.

What a bunch of bs. Yes it is hard to drive at that speed in the heat but there's not a lot of individual athleticism involved. Plus you have to rely on a mechanical device that does the real work!

The other thing Jimmie has going for him is that he is a class act. Always grateful, a gentleman and a fantastick driver. AND he even alluded that if he didn't win the chase he was happy to see Mark Martin (a living legend and deserving teammate) would be the Champ. He's great.

I didn't know that gold is a sport. I used to play golf 6 days a week, and now I find out that I am an athlete.

Go Jimmy.

For those of you thrashing the guy, lets see you drive during a race. Nascar is a sport like it or not.

Racing cars is NOT a sport never has been never will be. Give me a stinkin break. Golf is not a sport it is a game. when a 15 year old girl (michele wie ) can play with the best men players in the world than it's not a sport.. Get over yourselves. It doesn't take any athleticism to stand and hit a little ball and then get in your little cart and drive to where you hit the ball. You people who like to think racing and golf are sports must be some of the biggest whimps there is. You probably never played a man's sport in your lives.

Let me see:

Sitting in a car for hours. wow! no restroom breaks!
Holding on tight to a wheel with both hands. both hands! !
Pushing one foot up/down on a tiny peddle. remember, that foot MUST be in good physical shape! !
Where do the drivers go for all the extensive training? school?
Do they where a cup for all the bruising that might happen? what size?
Do they wear wrist bands so there hands don't get sweaty?
Do they have special windshield wipers? wow!
Do they actually drink beer before, during or afterward? or all 3?
'
Inquiring minds want to know.

HAH nascar must have bribed someone to write this lame story up. Top athlete in nascar is like saying "Im the tallest midget" or "Im the smartest retard" . nascar is a joke, just like america is. America.. home of the "everybody has to be the same or we throw u in jail" kind of freedom and nascar is a embodyment of it.

Jimmy Johnson is a great race car driver but that DOES NOT make him a great athlete. Definition of athlete: "a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill."

Good job selling your Jimmie Johnson or Nascar, but we are not interested. To be fair between golf and Nascar, Nascar is a sport.
